The first time I actually saw this arcade game, it creeped me the hell out.

Just a brief note to mention that I acquired a whole bunch of Malibu Comics’s Mortal Kombat in a purchased collection for the shop yesterday, including the limited silver foil edition of Goro Prince of Pain #1:

…the gold foil edition of Blood & Thunder #1:

…and of course, the hologram edition of that first Blood & Thunder:

I believe the accepted expression in cases such as these is “kids, ask your parents about the 1990s.”

Mortal Kombat is one of those comics franchises that we never seem to be able to keep in the shop. I still have a lot of back issue demand for these, and I suspect even this relatively sizable collection, about 80 to 100 pieces in all, won’t stick around in the old funnybook bins for that long.

Also, since you all seem to like it when I remind you of such things: these comics came out nearly twenty years ago. You’re welcome.

Really? Demand for MK comics? I’m surprised. Can’t say I ever picked up any of them. Were they any better than the standard 90s punch-em-ups? Or is it all just nostalgia?

The first Mortal Kombat game came out on SNES and Genesis twenty years ago in September.

Which means the arcade game is even OLDER.

    AHHHHHHHH!

    G23,

I bought Malibu’s Mortal Kombat comics as a kid, and reread them only a couple years back. They’re… solidly above average compared to most video game adaptations, which still isn’t very good by most other standards, but competent enough that I can see why there’d still be some affection for them.

The art holds up worse than the writing. It’s… very 90s.

I read these when I was a kid. Lacking a good area comic shop, I relied on local grocery stores to collect them, and I ended up missing issue #4. I wrote Malibu asking how I could order a copy, and they sent me the comic for free, with “MERRY CHRISTMAS!!” written on the cardboard sleeve. I still remember that incident with considerable affection.

I have to say I enjoyed them. For some reason, although I was less than worthless at the video game (and, indeed, any fighting-style game), I loved the MK universe. I don’t care what you think about me, the first movie was amazing. I even watched the tv show. Ah, memories.

    REALLY? oy.

“issue #4. I wrote Malibu asking how I could order a copy, and they sent me the comic for free,”

    that WAS nice of them!

““kids, ask your parents about the 1990s.””

they don’t NEED to- just look at DCs new garbage!
