The Hulk being “Man of the Year” in 1978 sounds like a reference to the success of The Hulk TV series…that and the Spider-Man TV series were great parts of the Gen X childhood…I even enjoyed the goofy attempt at Captain America…and the very ’70s Doctor Strange. I wonder why they never crossed any of the characters over? Although I guess Hulk eventually met Thor, and also Daredevil, in some Hulk TV movies.
Is he man of the year or monster of the year, or… Is he both?
I became a Pizzazz subscriber after seeing that Star Wars cover for issue #1 at my local 7-11. It was a great mix of articles, comics (Tarzan and Star Wars), puzzles, an advice column, tv and movie reviews, corny jokes, and just plain weird-ass features that seemed completely random and unrelated to comics or pop culture. Of course, 13-year-old me loved it. Issue #3 had a short article on how the Spidey comic strip was done with pics of Stan and John Romita as well as a recipe for how to make Christmas wassail punch.
“Hulk is man of year OR HULK SMASH!”
