BREAKING: Exclusive footage of water-based superheroics!
I was old enough (if not geographically close enough) in 1977 to have gone to see this show:

…but alas, I did not. Thankfully, I can experience it now via the miracle of the YouTubings:

There is now an aching, empty hole in the center of my soul for having missed that terrific performance. I am a lesser man for it.
The 40-year-old YouTube video only slightly ameliorates the pain AND ironically reopens the wound at the same time.
This is glorious. And awful. And I feel only slightly ashamed for loving it as much as I do.
For years I had this image of the Super Friends on skis, but could not put the images into context. And then, maybe 5-6 years ago, I stumbled across a picture of this ski show online and my mind was blown. I picked up the phone and called my folks, and apparently they took me to see this at a Sea World in Ohio. It was nice to know I hadn’t just been suffering random images of super friends on skis for no reason for about 3 decades.
Pro-tip: if you call your folks about Super Friends on skis, have something else to talk about as well.
I actually saw this. I want to say it was 1978 or 1979, though, not 1977. I don’t remember much, other than some nonsense about Aquaman and The Joker competing to see who was the best barefoot skier (The Joker was disqualified after cheating, naturally), and there was a guy selling those tabloid-sized comics outside. I bought Superman Vs Muhammad Ali, then changed my mind and asked my Dad to exchange it for a Batman one that collected a Neal Adams Ras Al Ghul storyline, which was a little darker than my young mind was used to at the time.
I also caught a nasty bout of food poisoning from something I ate at Sea World, and threw up in the parking lot.
So, lots of mixed emotions while watching this video.
The 1970s were a different world, and we did things differently there.
You’re old enough to go see the Marvel Universe stage show. I had no idea such a thing existed but billboards have gone up all over Sacramento for shows later this month. A little me would have loved it.
