Saturday Morning Swampy.

Some of you may remember my previous mentions of an early show on the Nickelodeon cable channel entitled Video Comics, in which various DC Comics stories starring the Flash, Green Lantern, Sugar and Spike, etc. would be presented panel by panel with narration. You may also remember my noting this show as one of the methods by which I was introduced to Swamp Thing, another character featured on the program.

Thanks to reader Patrick, who emailed me yesterday to let me know that an episode of Video Comics finally popped up on YouTube, starring guess who:

This episode lacks the intro Video Comics usually had (I think, probably, just for the more superhero-y installments) of the kids riding their bikes to the local market to ransack the comic racks, while Wagner’s “Ride of the Valkyries” played. Though, I suppose if you have to have at least the music:

Anyway, thanks again to Patrick for letting me know that Video Comics finally showed up on the Internet somewhere. This hit the ol’ nostalgia button!

    that was awesome!!!!!

  • I am so glad to be able to share this with you. So few people seem to have ever seen it. I shared this video with my oldest friend yesterday, and he had no idea the show existed. We grew up in the same media market, and met through a love of comic books in high school. Crazy.

Hopefully this is not the last one that turns up. If it is, we sure got a good one. I’ve been looking for videos of this regularly since YouTube premiered in 2005. I can’t believe it took 8 years for an episode to be posted.

Maybe next time we’ll get Space Cabby or Space Ranger. Actually, I would love to see the Sugar and Spike ones again. They were done so well that they made a life long fan out of me of that series. I would have eventually found Swamp Thing, but S&S would probably never have entered my awareness.

  • I knew of Sugar & Spike for years before I knew what the characters looked like, from people in my second grade class re-enacting bits from Video Comics. My family didn’t get Nickelodeon for many years, so I missed all their original programming, including Tomorrow People and the Third Eye umbrella show. People said there were Green Lantern cartoons as well, but what everybody wanted to talk about was Sugar & Spike.

I was one of the few who remember this show too. Watched all of them at some point and I remember this Swampy episode very well. I remember a Flash one that got repeated an awful lot.
I was also a Tomorrow People fan too and saw all of those episodes multiple times.
