More like “Sir Links-A-Little.”
- The Rack, the comic strip about a comic shop by Kevin Church and Benjamin Birdie, has come to a shocking and somewhat abrupt end. This was a fine run of a great comic that wasn’t just nerd jokes and never wallowed in fanboy whining. I’ll miss it.
Of course, if this turns out to be some elaborate plot stunt by Kevin and Birdie, I’ll strangle the both of ’em.
For another strip in the same “universe” as The Rack, Mr. Church and Paul Salvi present The Line.
- Andrew brings us more Nobody’s Favorites…this time, a group of characters I never much liked when they popped up in Legion, and had their own short-lived series I never read. …A ringing endorsement!
- From a fellow Bureau Chief comes this new project: The Content Farm! Learn how to do things in ways that may or may not be practical!
I remember seeing an ad for that series in an early comic I got when I was a young ‘un. The tagline stayed with me forever.
“The Wanderers. Reborn to solve one final mystery: Who killed them?”
To a wide-eyed innocent boy, that was a hell of an idea. I think I’ve read one issue.
I was really taken aback by the end of the Rack. I’ve been reading it since it started and then out of nowhere it’s over in a very confusing manner. I can only assume the joke is an American reference, but I didn’t get it at all.
Disappointing end to what was once a great comic, although I’ve gotten the impression Church and Birdie haven’t really been “into it” for perhaps the last 6-8 months.

I’m sorry.
Wait, what?? The Rack ending is *not OK*!
I was very surprised to see THE RACK end, and kind of hope Church and Birdie return to it someday, if only for the occasional “update” strip or something. It was something I looked forward to reading three times a week, and I can’t remember how many times I’d send links to friends or talk it up to folks at my LCS– “You have to read this! It’s great!” I can’t quite fathom the idea that they “weren’t into it”–whatever personal decisions or feelings went into the decision to end it, “boredom” never registered in the strips themselves– if anything, there was so much going on (like the bit about Jerry’s “escape bag”) that it feels like a lot of interesting threads were still there to be resolved. And the fact that I sometimes was surprised or annoyed by certain turns in the strip speaks to how well Church and Birdie imagined this whole world. I’ll miss it.
I should clarify my statement “not into it”. It was less to do with the actual strips and more to do with the breaks, the change of release schedule, guest runs and the alteration of the ‘staff picks’.
I’m obviously not in the know of the behind the scenes story, but it just felt (to me) like something changed post LARPness saga (which was AWESOME).
You’re right though Brian. There were a few extant threads left over which is why it was such a surprise.
Perhaps it’s just me being disappointed one of my favourite reads is gone from a market that is producing less and less I am interested in…

Yes, we were “not into it” with the three weekly updates, lack of advertising and a few guest comics and pinups used to make sure that free entertainment was delivered to the audience on a regular schedule.
Well at least you know how to treat your audience right…
Kevin Church: Thanks for coming by and not explaining your final joke.
Kevin Church touched me.
