It’s an ill wind, and all that.
So we picked all these up from a local yard sale…a bunch of JFK memorial photo mags published in 1964 which are all surprisingly in reasonably good shape:
In Memoriam has a full-color centerspread “pin up” of Jackie Kennedy, which seems a little odd, considering. Also, not sure why the Four Dark Days mag above is pictured in the corner of the In Memoriam cover, since the two appear to have different publishers. (Unless of course they are from the same publisher, using two different names and addresses.
This “Federal City” one is a mix of pages regarding the life and assassination of Kennedy, with a photo tour guide of sites of note around Washington, DC.
This next one was published in 1965: Article of note: “What The Stars Say about Bobby’s Presidential Hopes.” And not “stars” as in “Gina Lollobrigida” — I mean, and I quote:
“A wry sense of humor is suggested by the position of Venus in Capricorn near the mid-heaven, favored by a conjunction with Jupiter.”
This is all very depressing.
But you left out the scan of Jackie Onassis?
I like how they thought Lyndon Johnson was going to serve two terms and that’s when Bobby Kennedy would be elected. Those stars were really off on that one.
Mikester,
Look at the top right hand corner of the top 2 covers.
Both are the same symbol.
Is that the publisher’s symbol?
I can’t tell, but most likely THAT’s why the “Four Dark Days” is on the “In Memorium” cover.
(minor note: you wrote “In Memorial”but it’s “memoriUM”. Yeah. SOMEONE was going to point it out.)
~P~
Yeah, it does look like both are published by the same company – at least to my eyes.
One of these would have been handy to read in that grassy knoll.
I was obsessed with the John Kennedy assassination. I used to clip out of the newspaper articles about the Warren Commission report.
As for Bobby, didn’t trust him at all, yet was pained by his death as well.
Dark days indeed.
I’m pretty sure that “K” symbol is a distributor symbol, like the “IND” for Independent News and “CC” for Curtis Circulation. Perhaps that is an old logo for Kable News?
That doesn’t rule out that the two magazines were published by the same people using different companies and addresses. It happened all the time.
Sanctum – Oops, you’re right…title is fixed now!
I am very, very impressed by the insights astrology was able to provide into John F. Kennedy’s character. A “wry sense of humor” is, after all, something you can discover only through study of the alignment of the planets–not by, say, listening to or reading the man’s many, widely reported public statements.
Made slightly less depressing by your dropping “Gina Lollobrigida.”
Sanctum – Ugh, just noticed I didn’t fix it, I just screwed it up again. I’ll fix it tonight.
SIGH. I apparently need a vacation.
